Where to Eat & Drink in Halifax

One of the things I love most about travel is getting to experience local food and drink specialties. This month, I will be heading back to Halifax, Nova Scotia to get as much seafood as I can handle. Since this is my third trip to Halifax in as many years, by now I've got a pretty good lay of the land and have figured out which bars and restaurants are my favourite. Here's my guide to the best food and drink in Halifax.

Formal Dining

For a nice, fancier dinner in a beautiful environment, check out The Press Gang or Edna Restaurant. Both offer high quality cuisine and a great opportunity to sample the region's fresh seafood prepared by some of the city's best chefs. You can view a full review of my first trip to The Press Gang here. Both these restaurants are so tasty that I've already been multiple times and intend on going back again this time around.

Tapas & Cocktails

For tapas, cocktails, and happy hour snacks pop into Lot Six or Highwayman. These are great places to experiment with artisanal drinks and sharable plates. Lot Six offers a special price on happy hour oysters every day from 4-6pm.

Casual Fare

For a simple lunch or to enjoy fresh seafood without the frills, head to the waterfront. The Battered Fish is the place you want for traditional fried fish and Dave's Lobster is where to go fro a classic maritime lobster roll. If you're in Halifax over the weekend, Goldwater Lobster Shack also does a to-die-for lobster roll at the Seaport Farmer's Market. Why not try both Dave's & Goldwater and compare which you like best? If you're in the mood for some maritime celtic culture, head to Durty Nelly's Irish pub for fish & chips and a pint of locally brewed beer.

Just Drinks

If you like a good drink to follow all that food, Halifax is also a great place to explore locally brewed craft beers. Stop into Propeller Brewing Co. or spend an afternoon in Stilwell's outdoor Beergarden. While on the waterfront, stop by the Halifax Distilling Company to sample a flight of homemade, locally distilled rums.

Halifax may be a small city but it has plenty of delicious spots on offer, particularly if you love fresh seafood brought straight from the ocean. For more information on what to do in Halifax, check out 5 Things To Do In Halifax.
