Skin Benefits of Chocolate Makeup
This is a guest post by Cassie Brewer.
Like me, you likely loved flavoured lip glosses during your youth, or maybe you still love them! My favourite was an espresso-hued balm that tasted like coffee beans…and tinted my lips a glorious shade of 90’s chocolate brown! That balm packed fashion and fun into one tasty lippie and, while that perfect lip balm is long gone, other candy-inspired cosmetics are taking up where those yummy balms left off.
Cocoa-infused cosmetics are the new grown-up way to channel confection-inspired beauty. The trend has erupted in a sweet sensation. An insanely popular beauty brand has even packed chocolate-infused decadence into eye palettes, bronzer, and, of course, lip gloss!
Cocoa has become the ingredient of choice in the beauty world…and has even been a secret solution for years. The bean’s unique properties lavish the face with more than just a luscious scent. Dark chocolate is known to be chock full of antioxidants and also protects against free radicals. So it makes sweet sense that cocoa would be ideal ingredient to help pamper the tender and sensitive skin on the eyes and face.
According to Scientific American, dark chocolate’s benefits also are unleashed once the chocolate hits our gut. However, I wouldn’t recommend eating your cocoa-infused cosmetics; if you’re craving DIY edible cocoa goodness; opt for melting down some dark chocolate chips and covering your cookies with the homemade sauce.
For those ready to dust their face and body in decadent cocoa-infused cosmetics and skincare lines, check out the many benefits that cocoa provides the skin:
According to a 2009 study published by the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, eating dark chocolate may help protect the skin from UV damage. The researchers concluded that their study “demonstrated that regular consumption of a chocolate rich in flavanols confers significant photoprotection and can thus be effective at protecting human skin from harmful UV effects. Conventional chocolate has no such effect.” So go ahead and eat that dark chocolate! And then invest in cocoa fueled bronzer, because can we ever get enough chocolate!?
Head to the kitchen and mix up some body butter—infused with cocoa, of course! Dr. Oz boasts about the benefits of cocoa for the skin and the body on his site, and even recommends a homemade hand lotion made from yogurt, honey and cocoa! As the ingredients are simple and natural, you could likely use this on your face, too. But, no, you may not lick the spoon!
Oh those nasty free radicals…always out to ruin your youth! Bust them with a chocolate facial. According to The Telegraph, cocoa facials are a beauty must-have. The cocoa beats down aging free radicals to help unveil softer and more moisturized skin.
The smell of chocolate releases happy chemicals in our brain—hello, endorphins! The delicious scent can take us back to childhood or maybe it reminds us of our favourite dessert. Using cocoa-infused cosmetics and beauty products elicits happiness, and just that lift—that beautiful and emotional lift—is enough to make use want to cover ourselves in delectable cocoa dust!
Take a trip back to your younger days when you covered your lips in sweet smelling balm that tasted like candy! This time, though, opt for products that are luxuriously infused with sweet cocoa powder. Treat your skin to a nutrient-rich dessert that will leave you feeling happy and help your skin combat those finicky free radicals.
