Pampering On Purpose: Why Treating Yourself is Healthy, Not Frivolous
This is a guest post by Cassie Brewer.
Modern-day gals have so much on their plates. They need to hustle at work, nurture at home, run a million and one errands, and manage a billion things at once. But when you’re trying to juggle so much, it can feel like you’re about to come undone at the seams.
What can you do when you feel like you’re unraveling and need to get away from it all? “Treat yo-self”! This saying has become the slogan of so many 21st century women. But why is it that you are having a hard time following it? Is it because you feel guilty if you take some time off?
Do you think that others will think you’re selfish?
Well, listen up, ladies! Pampering yourself is anything but frivolous; it’s a necessity! It’s vital for your overall health and well-being. Keep on reading to find out why you really need to kick back, relax, and spend some quality time with yourself.
You know the feeling… Your calendar is full as far as the eye can see and you barely have a moment to sit down and eat a meal like a normal human being. You become so overwhelmed that you start snapping at the smallest things.
When you’re so overwrought, you’re constantly on edge and are a ball full of tension. Taking a time out and focusing on you for a bit can significantly reduce your anxiety levels, make you happier, and help you sweat the small stuff a little less. So go ahead and enjoy some quality YOU time. Go shopping and treat yourself to some fabulous jewels (many of which, coincidentally, can help relieve anxiety), plan a day at the spa, or just shut off your alarm clock and sleep in.
A Healthier You…
Does it seem like you’re constantly getting sick? It could be because you have so much going on that your immune system isn’t working as well as it should be.
When you’re constantly stressed, you’re more prone to illness. Why? Because your brain goes on the defense and tries to protect your body by kicking the endocrine system into high gear, which causes an increase in the production of cortisol (the stress hormone). The goal is to prepare your body to handle the stress. In short doses, cortisol can help you handle stress more effectively, but in large doses, cortisol can wreck havoc on your immune system, which makes it harder to fight off illnesses and even increases the risk of certain diseases.
Pampering yourself isn’t just good for your mind; it’s good for your body. If you want to keep your immune system in tip-top shape, spoiling yourself needs to be a priority.
… And a Happier You, Too!
Are you snapping at everyone you come into contact with? Have you become known as the grouchy lady that people are afraid to talk to? Have your friends stopped calling you to hang out because you’ve become a real Debbie Downer?
It’s not you; it’s your stress! You still want to be that happy-go-lucky person you used to be, but your stress levels are dragging you – and your personality – down. When you’re stressed to the max, handling your emotions can be tough. Your blood boils quickly and you get enraged at the drop of a hat.
Treating yourself to some TLC can do wonders for your mood. Whether you take up yoga, start meditating, go to the salon, or hit the spa, spending some time on you will ease your stress and make you a much happier person.
Making yourself a priority can be hard when your life is so hectic. But remember: pampering should never be considered frivolous; it’s an absolute must for your health and happiness.
