Anti-Aging Tricks To Start Now
This is a guest post written by Emily S.
When we’re in our twenties, some of the last things we want to start thinking about are fine lines and wrinkles. However, we’d all like to look young and healthy as the decades go by, right? There are a handful of preventative skin and hair care tips that can help us all age gracefully (and hopefully keep us all looking twenty-five forever!). It’s important to note that it’s never too early, or too late to take proper care of your skin and hair. Use the five tips below to begin your anti-aging beauty regimen!
Stop Washing Your Hair!
The “to wash my hair or not to wash my hair” debate is one of recent popularity. It seems as though everyone (hair experts and beauty novices included) have a different take on this controversial beauty topic. For anti-aging properties, I recommend washing your hair as infrequently as you can. Though commonly overlooked, aging occurs in our hair too. Overworked and overheated strands lose density and elasticity, resulting in a brittle, dull mane. Washing your hair every day only speeds up this process! Over-washing your hair strips your locks of their natural oils and tends to dry out your hair. Washing your hair every couple days can restore shine and split ends!
Use a Gentle Face Cleanser
When you’ve reached your mid-twenties, it’s time to ditch the foaming acne cleansers that were oh-so-important in your teen years. Unless prescribed by your dermatologist, skip abrasive cleansers that can strip your skin of its natural moisture. Alternatively, try a gentle cleansing milk, oil, or balm. These formulas are much kinder to our skin and have great cleansing properties to dissolve makeup and grime after a long day. There are plenty of delicate formulas that you can integrate into your daily skincare routine. The most important part? Be sure to wash your face both morning and night!
Don’t Forget an SPF!
The biggest no-brainer is being diligent about using an SPF -- no matter what season it is! Studies have shown that sun exposure may cause up to 90% of the visible changes attributed to aging. Daily sun protection will go a long way in anti-aging. Selecting an SPF in the 15-30 range is more than enough for daily use, but make sure to use it liberally! During the summertime, use a lightweight sunscreen that you can layer on below your daily makeup routine. In the cooler months, make sure to select a foundation or BB cream with an SPF listed in its ingredients. Using makeup formulated with an SPF is a foolproof way to make sure you’re getting enough daily sun protection.
Avoid Harmful Ingredients in Your Hair Care
One of the most common ingredients in our hair care products, including hair dyes, shampoos, and conditioners, is sulfates. They’re commonly used in our hair care products for their cleansing properties but tend to get a bad rap because they’re quite wearing on our hair’s natural texture. They strip our hair of its natural oils, making it feel rough, dry, and brittle. If you’re searching for ways to maintain your youthful strands, start with your hair dye. Using a customized color that’s free of sulfates is a more natural way to switch up your hair color, especially if your known for transforming from blonde to brunette in the flip of a switch.
Load Up on Antioxidants
How we look on the outside is greatly impacted by how we’re treating our inside! Incorporating antioxidants into our diet is necessary to fight potentially damaging oxidizing agents, known as free radicals, in our digestive systems. These free radicals are known for causing signs of aging, as they cause cell damage and inflammation, which lead to wrinkles and age spots. Antioxidants can counteract the effects of free radicals! Plenty of my favorite fruits, like blueberries, strawberries, and blackberries, as well as leafy greens, are packed with antioxidants. Try a smoothie bowl as a tasty and nutritious way to incorporate antioxidants into your diet!
