What's Up Toronto?: CMW Edition
It's May and that means it's time for Canadian Music Week! Over the next ten days you can catch 1000 different bands at over 60 different venues across downtown Toronto. With so many great bands to chose from it can get pretty overwhelming so I thought I'd share who's on my must-see list this year. (Full disclosure: A lot of these bands feature my friends, acquaintances, or brother's roommates. I'm lucky that I get to spend my time surrounded by such talented people!)
Whale Eye - Tuesday May 5 @ 11pm - Dakota Tavern
Whale Eye is the brainchild of singer-songwriter Dylan Turner, who may be one of the first musicians I ever saw live in concert. This was waaay back when I used to get my parents to drop me off at the only all-ages club in my hometown so I could hear some live music. I've followed Dylan's music as it's changed over the years, and I have to say that the acoustic folk sound he's found now is my favourite so far! For tickets click here.
The Jessica Stewart Few - Wednesday May 6 @ 12AM - The Cameron House
If you like your indie-folk served alongside a little jazz then The Jessica Stewart Few is the band you don't want to miss. After touring internationally and winning "Best Album" at the 2014 Independent Music Awards, this Canadian Trio is back in Toronto for CMW. Look out for their upcoming third album set to be released this fall. For tickets click here.
Bellwoods - Saturday May 9 @ 9PM - Horseshoe Tavern
If you've been singing along to the recent radio hit "Live It Up" and wondered who's behind that tune, I'm hear to tell you it's the local Toronto music collective Bellwoods. After touring Quebec and western Canada the band is finally performing in their hometown. Advance tickets are already sold out so be sure to show up early to buy them at the door.
