Bar Buca has been the go-to restaurant for a few of my work colleagues for ages now. After months of hearing about their incomparable coffee, mouth-watering brunch, and "life-changing" sandwiches I finally got myself a table and settled in for multiple courses. With a lot to celebrate in my life lately Bar Buca was the perfect place to raise a toast and tuck in to some delicious food that was guaranteed to be worthy of the occasion.
They've got a pretty impressive wine collection, but we went for a signature cocktail that was dark, boozy, and just a little bit fruity.
I've decided that tapas style dining is my favourite way of eating since that way I get to sample so much more! Bar Buca's menu is perfect for me because all dishes are meant to be shared.
First we have octopus skewers with soppressata sausage slices on a bed of potato cream. Lightly charred and delicately flavoured octopus contrasts beautifully with the heartier sausage.
I feel like tongue is everywhere on every menu these days, and I'm constantly being introduced to new ways of enjoying a food that I'd previously decided wasn't really for me. Here we had beef tongue carpaccio with buffalo yogurt, pickled mushroom, turnip, radish, and micro greens. The thinly sliced carpaccio ensured that the spongy texture of tongue was completely absent so I was able to enjoy the pure flavour of the meat.
Clams in a tomato sauce with squash and fennel seed. Delicious, but I wouldn't have minded slightly less tomato sauce so that the flavour of the clams could shine through a little more.
Goat and ricotta meatballs. What I loved about these is that you can really taste both the meat and the cheese in the meatballs. Too often the flavour of the cheese gets overwhelmed by the meat in a dish like this, but at Bar Buca the flavours are wonderfully balanced.
The "life-changing" porchetta sandwich. Roasted pork, mascarpone, and a fruity apple jam are stuffed inside crispy, buttery, salty focaccia. This really is one of the best sandwiches I've ever had and I will definitely be going back to Bar Buca to order it again. Hands down my favourite savoury item that evening.
I don't usually order desert but, like I said, we were celebrating! And I'm so very glad we were because this is definitely one of the best deserts I've ever had. Homemade bread pudding with orange slices, chocolate sauce, and crème anglaise. Somehow a mouthful of this desert allows you to taste every ingredient on it's own while still enjoying how the combination of flavours compliment each other. Every element of this desert is rich in quality of flavour and ingredients, making it an absolutely perfect way to end the meal. This is another dish I'll be going back to order a second time.
Good to the very last bite!
