Christmas Snapshots 2014

Hello, Internet! It's been awhile...

I had a few fun holiday posts planned and a few fun running-around-my-hometown posts planned for this past week but, alas, I got sick. I spent a good portion of my holiday sleeping, drinking orange juice, and watching Love Actually, completely devoid of any finger-typing energy.

Christmas itself was lovely. To sum up this last week, here are a few snapshots I managed to take before succumbing to the plague.

My grandmother sets the most beautiful tables. Those are real leaves that she collects from her garden and paints gold. I'm definitely going to try this myself when it's my turn to be the hostess.  I might also try dipping the tips of the evergreens in paint so they get a kind of metallic ombre effect.

I wasn't the only person who got sick this Christmas. My parents have been under the weather for weeks and had to hunt down a tree at the last minute. I think this one looks pretty great and no one needs to know it was one of the last ones that nobody else wanted...

Stockings by the fireplace may be traditional, but they seem like a terrible fire hazard to me… Stockings by the staircase are much safer. And you get a cute alliteration out of it as a bonus.

Non-flammable ornaments are much better when you've got a real wood fire going on… My parents are renovating their 19th century home and recently uncovered the old chimney behind some boring drywall. I love the way the new fireplace looks. One day I will have a wood burning fireplace with a fashionable brick detail...

Unwrapping the ornaments every year and seeing them on the tree is like saying hello to old friends after a long time apart.

We had a special guest this year: my parents are babysitting the most adorable kitten while his owner is away. This little four-month-old is like a crazy teenager and can barely stay still long enough for a picture to be taken. This is the best one I could get and it's still blurry! I was barely able to snap it before he scampered away...

"Don't you want to play?"

One of my favourite things about going home is being a little bit closer to nature. I wasn't well enough to make it down to the lake, but I grabbed a picture on the drive back to Toronto to tide me over until I can go home again.

There's the big city all teeny tiny across the water. The skyline looks kind of like a dream from far away. But as we drive back the city gets bigger and bigger until it comes to life and we're home. Our other home.. away from home..

Now it's time for a rest so I can stave off a relapse of this awful flu! Things should be back on track around here from now on...

I hope you all had a wonderful holiday, whether you celebrate Christmas or what some people refer to fondly as "Netflix Day"!
