Blog Goals

I’ve been blogging, as strictly a hobby, for a couple of years now. I wrote about whatever I wanted, whenever I wanted, with basically no plan or consistency of any kind. The blog was just for me and my readership was almost exclusively my friends and family.

Around Christmas, I’d just finished my first semester of grad school and I decided it was time to really commit to blogging as more than a hobby and as something that could help me grow my writing career. This blog is still teeny tiny in the grand scheme of the Internet, but it has grown more in the last four months than it has in the last two years.

So, for the first time, I’m starting to think about all the mechanics and science of blogging. Learning how to grow my blog has become kind of an obsession and, also for the first time, I’ve made a list of concrete blogging goals.

I’m sharing this partly in the hopes that writing my goals down and posting them on the internet will help hold me accountable. But I would also love to her from other bloggers out there. What goals do you have? What have you achieved already that helped grow your blog? What advice do you have? Say hello in the comments!

Small Goal: Include a beautiful Pin-able Pinterest image in every post. I know Pinterest is one of the most important sources of traffic for bloggers, but I’ve already got my hands full with Facebook and Twitter and Instagram, so I’ve pretty much buried my head in the sand and pretended that Pinterest doesn’t exist. But no more! It’s time for me to harness the power of the pin!

Medium Goal: Create exclusive content for my email subscribers. According to all the blogging gurus, the most effective way to build your email list is to offer an incentive of some kind for those who subscribe. Popular incentives seem to be PDFs with titles like: Make Money From Instagram! Or 5 Ways To Double Your Blog Traffic! Since I know very little about most things, I’ve been struggling to figure out what I can offer my subscribers. I’m currently brainstorming some ideas, so my medium goal is to create my own incentive to offer subscribers in the near future.

Big Goal: Write blog posts ahead of time. This is a Big Goal because it will involve restructuring the way I approach my time management and my work schedule. It may seem easy for some people to simply write more in advance, but I’m constantly struggling to balance many different writing projects. It’s hard to give them all the time they deserve. Currently, I write almost every blog post in the morning, post it right away, and then use the afternoon for my other projects. This system has been working OK so far, but I think I would be much happier and less stressed if I were more organized. Ideally I’d like to devote 1-2 days a week to writing blog posts for the week ahead so that I can focus the rest of my days on my book and longer articles. When I try and do everything in one day, every day, I end up splitting my focus and feeling overwhelmed by all the different projects. Overhauling my daily schedule is going to be a challenge for someone like me who likes her routine, but I think it will be worth it!
