The Press Gang was the number one Halifax restaurant recommended by my globe-trotting friends. Located right downtown and tucked into a beautiful historic stone building that dates all the way back to 1759, the Press Gang has something for everyone. Poultry, game, and -- of course -- fantastic seafood are complimented by an extensive seasonal cocktail list and wines from around the world.
I ordered the "Scarface Sour", a traditional whiskey sour bumped up with chamomile honey and a hint of lavender. The quote floating on top took cocktail hour to a whole new level... I now expect all my drinks to be served with an icing of wisdom.
Staying true to my goal of eating nothing but seafood while in the maritimes, I ordered the tuna carpaccio appetizer. Served in a trio with beet confit, green papaya salad, tarro chips, and scallop ceviche, this was a truly unique and delicious dish. This appetizer was more elaborate than I expected and featured more variety than a traditional carpaccio.
For the main dish I ordered the daily special. As soon as our waiter described it, I was sold: mushroom risotto with a medley of haddock, scallops, and lobster. All of my favourite foods in one dish and a chance to try three kinds of local seafood!
This was so good I wished I could eat it again and again. It definitely deserves a permanent spot on the menu. The seafood was buttery, salty, and fresh which balanced the rich and creamy risotto perfectly.
This was easily my favourite meal in Halifax. I can't wait to go back to The Press Gang the next time I'm in town. Even though they likely won't have the same special, the entire experience was so lovely and delicious that I'll know I'll be happy with anything on their menu.
